I am that youtube guy!

I am that guy in the screen. I am the guy talking to you in cyberspace. I am that random dude who believes he is the subject matter expert (sme) on the one topic that totally has my attention these days. How can he harness the power of his hair that locks naturally and become an even more beautifully sculpted man? When he talks about his journey he believes that he is somehow helping another person gain clarity over the same topic that he is biased to. That is what YouTube does to a person. It gives them courage while YouTube gives his act of bravery page views and subscribers (people who love his work so much that they wanted to be notified when he post anything new). I am an unpaid, willing and motivated volunteer! What better way to serve mankind and those who believe I might have something worthwhile to say!

Didn’t make the cut!

I have an interesting problem. I can’t find a barber who cuts the way that I like. The first barber who cut my hair was an old guy. He took his time and cut my hair right! I was impressed! I looked in the mirror and admired the man standing there. After his cut I never saw him again. lol. I went back looking for the same cut a week and a half later and he wasn’t there. I needed so I went to a young brother. His hair was good, so I had no problem sitting his chair. He must have thought I him to hurry up and cut my head because he was done lining me in about 4 minutes. We all have a particular way we like our wigs cut, so when I asked him to watch a trouble spot I trusted he under stood me. Obviously not, because a 3 days later I was needing another line. Keep in mind the first barber’s cut lasted a week and a half, his lasted 3 days. I won’t be back. I might not go to the shop anymore; we’ll see. Then I took the advice my wife offered and tried my son’s barber. One thing she said was that he take a while when he cuts your hair. That was something I needed to hear. So I tried him. He took a decent amount of time and respected my trouble spot on my hair-line. His razor line was defined, his time on my wig was adequate and his hair was tight. All things considered, I will be back.

For the young and restless…

If you didn’t know that show was cancelled. I am not restless and I am definitely not trying to be that forever young icon that some people have eluded to in their comments. I am only doing what I have done in so many other areas of life and that’s pursue my interest. Somewhere along the way I found that opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. Sharing your thoughts about my decsion to get brother locks (dreads) stop short of my hearing and at the end of your lips.

Class Action

It has been said that getting dreads are life changing. A friend told me that people respond to those with dreadlocks in a way that is different from traditional hairstyles. When he told me that it felt like a fraternity. I felt like I was that man in black with midnight glossed shades and an ear piece. He made the complete transition seem special and I was special to have made the trip. I listened intently as he went on about those who hadn’t made the journey but revered how his locks. He was exotic, at least in their eyes. I was a regular, at least compared to him. Well its true. I had no dreadlocks, no mane to show that I was an alpha male in the pride. He was an old lion, roaring still. I was at best a tourist.

Been Youtubing…

I have found youtube.com to be a resourceful and very honest website. People say what they believe and that is no exception to sharing their story about the journey in growing their dreads. I have gotten so many ideas on the topic that I may be overdosing on dreadlocks clips and tips. It is one of the main topics on my mind these days. I am thinking about my hair a heck of a lot. I am still as motivated as May 1, when this journey began, and still eager to learn what I can about being natural. Coincidently I am learning more about myself. When you learn something about yourself in whatever you do that makes it worthwhile.

proud of the growth in just a couple of weeks

head shot

I can see some kinks! Yes! Note to kinky hair: I will embrace you!

Sick wit’ it…

Today I played a game with myself. I wanted to count the number or dreadlock hairstyles that I would see over a day. I counted five today. Four of the hairstyles were mature and one was in its teenage phase. Before this fixation or desire to have dreadlocks I can’t recall seeing any. Now that I am a candidate I see the hairstyles all the time! I guess it is like anything else, if we’re not interested in it you will never notice it until it becomes your reality.

Keeping my wig clean…

I want my hair to grow. I want my hair to grow healthy. I want my hair to grow as fast as possible! In talking with different people I got a lot of varying opinions.I talk to barbers who said washing your hair daily is just fine. While others have said washing your hair daily robs your hair of its natural oils. I have to admit I was at a crossroads because  on one hand several licensed barber have agreed that washing daily is fine while on the other hand those who say it warms your hair of its natural oils makes sense. The one nugget of information I picked up from those women hair books was co-washing. Co-washing uses conditioners to revitalize and strengthen your hair. That was a good piece of definitive information. Now I can get back on track with my hair regimen and growing my afro!

Where are the men books at?

I find myself thumbing through a ton of women books looking for that one particular chapter that pertains to men. It has been like having a sifter on a beach. I can find a lot of sea shells but there only one particular kind I like. I mean…well my hair is identical to theirs right? Men and women beyond the perms and relaxers, braids and weave have the same type hair…right? I am going to say,”yes.” without fact checking that.I hope I am right. I digress. At any rate, I just think it would be better for me to be able to grab a book by a male author on hair, particularly dreadlocks …well brother locks. Just like men have  magazines and women have magazine I figured books on hair are no different. Something is telling me that I am on the right track with reading women books and that I am as close to getting to a book written by male as I am going to get. So in the meantime, I will flipping through  looking for that one sea shell that is for me in Diane, Lonnice and Chris-Tia’s books! Thanks ladies for getting the word out!

eeny meny miny mo!

Anytime you undertake something new there are so many options to choose from. Having brother locks are no different. I have heard a million ways to make your locks beautiful. You tube has a plethora of information! I laugh at myself as I say that but yeah, I have been a youtube.com junkie as of late. Let me be clear, I am serious about having nice dreads so I have done more research than that. I have checked out several books and plan to buy a few, talked with several brothers and sisters who wear them well and not so well, and talked with some professionals. All of whom have their unique perspectives on how to wear your locks. With so many perspectives, I have decided to find the one common denominator. The common denominator is natural hair. What I have found is that it makes the most sense to invest in natural products (ingredients) and techniques.

Who’s out?

  • Beeswax is out.
  • Stiff gels are out.
  • products with alcohol, fragrances, and colors…out.

What’s in?

  • Olive oil for cooking (thickens your hair and encouraging growth)
  • Castor oil as a moisturizer and hair stimulant
  • Baby shampoo because its gentle enough for frequent use.
  • Drinking water
  • Vitamins

Anchors in the ocean, so I can put wind in my sail…opps hair!

Warning: Thin Ice

As most people who know me know, I have been bald forever. I know it has been at least since 1991 after high school. Since then there has only been a four-month window where I allowed my hair to grow. It is in that span of time as I think back that a barber mentioned the thinning of hair on the crest of my head. I took it like a grain of salt because my hair was basically fine. Fast forward to May 11, 2011 when out of all the uplifted conversation I had with Bleena, the stylist and Natural-disiac I was alarmed when Bleena said, “There is some thinning but nothing to worry about; we have something for that.” Whoa! Wait a minute, that’s my wig you’re talking about. Now I am wondering if I have some type of hereditary defect that may impede my journey. Well I say that, but there is really plenty of strong hair in the area that is affected. It’s the obvious contrast when compared to the areas that gives me reason to pause. I guess in every journey there is a little drama along the way.
